1962 Topps Civil War News Gum Card Original Art - Unpublished work:

A powerful image of Custer riding gloriously into battle. - According to Dave Saunders, this piece is best attributed to Maurice Blumenfeld, and not his father Norman Saunders; both men credited with work on this fabled set! Caption in the margin at bottom references card #76 and reads: Waynesboro Mar. 2 1865 (Custer). Rendered on thick stock measuring near 7”x 5 ½”; Actual art at center measures 5 ½”x 3 7/8”. “Go down three blocks and make a left” is casually inscribed on back – A joke perhaps, alluding to Custer’s ferocious and determined gesture – Who knows! What matters is this image was never released on card #76, and this is not the art later used in the hysterical History set! We’ve checked!
